Self-taught artist Paul Quijada, originally from Los Angeles County, has been painting regularly in oils and acrylics since he was fourteen and has never strayed far from his own sense of romantic realism.
"I never really wanted to paint anything except the world--but to bring out the impact of its own reality beyond what human senses could do on their own."
To this end, Paul was first attracted in his teens to the Surrealism of Dali, Magritte and especially Yves Tanguy, for its effort to bring forward a hyper-reality from withing mere realism.
By his late twenties he had left pure surrealist subjects behind but maintained his now-characteristic forced perspective and highly contrastive detail to win local recognition for his cityscapes and "shell-scapes" such as the example here from the early 1980s:
